What are Primitive Reflexes?

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that develop in the womb and during the first months of life. They help the baby survive and support early development, preparing the nervous system for later voluntary movement, balance, and coordination.

As the brain matures, these reflexes are normally integrated during the first years of life and replaced by more controlled and efficient patterns of movement.

When some reflexes remain active beyond the early developmental stages, they may interfere with posture, coordination, attention, and learning. This does not mean something is “wrong”, but it may indicate that the nervous system has not fully completed some of its early developmental steps.
